Bad combination
Bad combination
Columnist Dana Milbank’s recent editorial (Tribune-Herald, Their View, June 3) expressed great disappointment with President Donald Trump pulling the United States out of the Paris climate accord.
But in a permit application to erect a sea wall to protect his golf course, Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland, in County Clare, Ireland, back in 2016, Trump cited “global warming and its effects” as a strong argument for permit approval to be granted to build “the wall.”
Donald J. Trump, who as a candidate and now as president called global warming a “hoax” and the science behind it “pseudoscience,” finds the climate change argument very convenient when it comes to monetizing his personal interests.
Folks, you can’t make this stuff up.
As one person proclaimed about Trump, we can excuse ignorance but deceit combined with ignorance is bad. Very bad.

Regarding “Leaders decry decision” (Tribune-Herald, Page A1, June 2): At least on the Big Island, we do not require emission inspections for vehicles, people (including college-educated types) or burning trash (everything from plastics to bed mattresses), we have one of the most polluted beaches in the world and the most polluted beach in the United States (Kamilo), and we have overfished some of our shorelines because we have no requirement for fishing licenses or enforcement of recreational catches.
Meanwhile, we just sank a large amount of money into refurbishment of a municipal golf course — one of the most toxic and environmentally unfriendly uses of land possible under current law.
Speaking of the state more broadly, we are the only member of the Union that has scaled back net-metering incentives for grid-tied solar power.
So, local leaders who are decrying the recent national-level decision, please put some legislation (and funds) where you mouth is, and let’s make Hawaii a real leader in climate and sustainability issues, not a vocal and hypocritical sideline advocate of such.
